Piracy Under the shadow of legitimate shops                                                                       Go Back to Front Page
It has been a matter of high concern to officials within the police and at IMI that there is open piracy of CDs and MP3s close to legitimate establishments like Planet M and Music World. This concern quickly translated itself into speedy crackdowns on various illegitimate vendors who have mushroomed close to these music shops.

The police swooped down on a vendor operating outside Planet M, Andheri barely 2 kms away from the music shop.

The police are also keeping a watch outside various outlets of Music World. A high level of piracy activity has been noticed around these legitimate shops. In Chennai, overnight raids in T.Nagar and Guindy were carried out.

Raids were also carried out at Delhi , Lucknow , Amritsar , Kolkatta (5 vendors), Hyderabad and Bangalore . All the raids carried out were barely a few kilometers away from legitimate outlets.

The usual haunt of pirated CD vendors like Burma Bazaar and China Bazaar also came under the eagle eye of law enforcers on 23 rd September.

In recent raids, a shop at Ludhiana , Aliganj in Lucknow and 2 vendors in Chitrapuri Cinema were also brought to book.

In all of the above cases- the shops, godowns or vendors were operating in close proximity to legitimate establishments obviously contributing to their losses. IMI alongwith its task force wants to ensure a better business environment for these legitimate outlets by rooting out illegal shops.

IMI conducts Training Programs
IMI takes its role and responsibility of weeding out piracy from the Indian music market very seriously. Training programmes are conducted for police officers across the country to spread awareness and bring about a common platform to stop piracy. Over 300 police officers and public prosecutors participated in this exercise. Held at the Andhra Pradesh Police Training Academy on 16 th September, the training programme was presided over by an esteemed judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

An exclusive training seminar on Protection of Copyrights was carried out for 52 officers at the request of the DG, Mizoram. Mr. Bhatia, a trained representative with IMI took the police officers through the nitty gritties of the Copyrights acts and laws and the various ways in which they can be enforced to ensure anti-piracy.

Facing The Music
It is quite clear that IMI and the police task force is in no mood to let any accused go scott free. Anil Ahuja of Annu Music Bhopal and Joshil Mohan of video 22, Chandigarh were raided for the 3 rd time in a row. IMI along with the police task force is bent upon bringing these serial offenders to justice. Another notorious dealer, Baba Film and Sound in L.R. Market in Delhi was also raided. IMI wants the law to ensure that those booked are given stringent punishments.

And the law has not failed these crusaders against piracy. In a previous raid in Tamil Nadu, the enforcers had managed to catch Nagalingam red handed. The accused was recently convicted with a 2-week imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 4000. The police and IMI's single minded focus has resulted in such convictions ensuring that the fight against piracy will always be successful.
