8367 in the first fortnight of December compared to 4509 in November.

Raids carried out in the First Fortnight of December
 
   
Freezing North Zone Fetches Thousands of Pirated Goods

The plummeting temperatures did nothing to slow down determined pirates in the first fortnight of December. The vigilant law enforcement and the anti-piracy teams had their hands full braving the cold and uncovering thousands of pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs across the North Zone.
   
Uttar Pradash led the piracy bandwagon with a total of 20099 pirated MP3 and VCDs recovered from shops in Ambedkar Nagar, Agra, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Gorakhpur, Bijnor and Etah.
   
Rajasthan wasn’t far behind with over 8375 MP3 CDs and VCDs to its credit. Two successful suo moto raids carried out by the Rajasthan police on 6 shops in the Hanumangarh area of Jaipur led to the seizure of 2622 pirated VCDs, 3 Computers and 2CD Writers and 256 MP3 CDs. With shutters being downed on Rhythm Audio Video, Ajai Music Center and Galaxy Music Center, 3 of the 6 establishments raided, it’ll be a while before they see any customers!
   
Raju Cassette Wala and Millennium Sound in Udaipur also sealed their chances of happily welcoming the New Year after raids uncovered 218 MP3 CDs and 30 pirated VCDs from their premises. Rajkumar Khatwani and Manish Kukreja were arrested on location.
   
Ajmer, popular for the world-renowned dargah of saint Salim Chisti, also came into the limelight for all the wrong reasons on December 8th when raids on 2 vendors in the Clock Tower area and 1641 MP3 CDs and 2121 pirated VCDs were seized.
   
The capital, New Delhi, as usual, yielded a big loot of 9267 pirated MP3 CDs, 8852 VCDs, 1079 CDs and 30 inlay cards. The raid led to the arrest of accused Vinod Mittal, Kamlesh, Siddharth and 5 others. The shops included those of Palika Bazaar and Flash Computers.
   
The sub-zero temperatures in Jalandhar too did nothing to dissuade pirates to take a break. A total of 2140 pirated MP3 CDs, 170 inlay cards and 3956 pirated VCDs were recovered from different shops including, the interestingly named, Love Music Centre in Sahkot. The seizure includes 80 VCDs of Warner titles.
   
While a successful raid on Music Point and Video in Chandigarh uncovered 7027 MP3 CDs and 10933 pirated VCDs, Muktasar and Amritsar also yielded some 4975 pirated MP3 CDs, VCDs and cassettes, 1 CCP (1X4), 8 CD Writers, 8 DVD Writers, 1 scanner, 225 blank CDRs and 40000 inlay cards. The culprits include owners of Ekta Music Center, GM Electronics, Shivshakti Electronics and Rinku Electronics.
   
In Patna, a CD recording unit was unearthed in an excellent raid conducted at a residential premise at Kadamkyan on 17th December. 6 Computers, 50 CD Writers, 300 blank CDRs, 3400 pirated VCDs and 10000 inlay cards were seized. Accused Uma Shankar Rai was arrested. In another excellent raid 4 shops, Shivam Center, Shivam CD Center, Modern Electronics and Super Electronics were searched in Lok Market, Dehri on 27th December. 300 pirated cassettes, 389 MP3 CDs and 866 pirated VCDs were recovered and 6 persons were arrested.
   
Delhi :- A shop called Chahat Music Center was searched in Old Seemapuri area of Delhi on 31st January. 651 MP3 CDs and 181 pirated VCDs were recovered. Accused Surya Narayan.
   
Dist. Buxar, Bihar :- 545 MP3 CDs and 1279 pirated VCDs were seized from 3 shops Lovely Video, Keshri Electronics and VIP Electronics in a suo motu operation by the Bihar Police in Dumrawan Town, Dist. Bixar on 23rd January. 3 persons were arrested.
   
Basti, U.P. :- In a raid conducted at a shop called Raj Video in Basti on 17th January, 302 MP3 CDs and 150 pirated VCDs were seized. Accused Shadiq Ali was arrested.
   
Sultanpur, U.P. :- In an excellent raid conducted at Sultanpur, U.P. on 24th January, a shop called Babloo Electronics was searched. 2209 MP3 CDs and 2072 pirated VCDs were seized. Accused Anees Ahmed was arrested.
   
Agra, U.P. :- A CD recording unit was seized from a residential premises in Fohara area of Agra on 30th January. 14 CD Writers, 350 pirated cassettes, 183 pirated CDs and 22000 inlay cards were recovered. Owner Raj Prakash was arrested.
   
Varanasi, U.P. :- In an excellent anti-piracy operation in Varanasi, U.P. a CDR unit was seized from a residential premises on 27th January. 11 CD Writers, 1 Computer, 1200 blank CDRs, 1073 pirated VCDs and 5500 inlay cards were recovered. Owner Pradeep Gethe was arrested.
   
Amritsar, Punjab :- 456 MP3 CDs and 551 pirated VCDs were seized form Pankaj Music Shop at Amritsar on 19th January. Owner Pankaj Kapur was arrested.
   
Dist. Moga, Punjab :- A shop called S.G. Electronics was raided in Dist. Moga on 23rd January. 390 MP3 CDs and 1074 pirated VCDs were seized. 2 persons Gagandeep and Sunil Kumar were arrested. (Seizure includes 60 VCDs of Warner titles).
   
Dist. Gurdaspur, Punjab :- In an excellent raid a CD recording unit was seized from a residential premise in Batala, Dist. Gurdaspur on 27th January. 4 CD Writers, 450 MP3 CDs and 505 pirated VCDs and 1450 inlay cards were seized. Owner Sukhraj was arrested.
   
Dist. Jaipur, Rajasthan :- 2 shops, Vari Electronics and BL Music Center were searched in Dudu, Dist. Jaipur (Rural) on 23rd January. 36 music cassettes, 94 MP3 CDs and 100 pirated VCDs were seized. 2 persons Shyam Kumar and Banwarilal were arrested.
   
   
South Zone Celebrates the Arrest of Notorious Pirates
   
The south zone reported some interesting developments in the first fortnight of December. The Chennai team had been keeping a watch on the activities of J. Jimmahkhan, a well known supplier of pirated CDs to Burma Bazaar. On 8th December, he was nabbed from his residence in Triplicane area of Chennai, and 455 MP3 CDs, 822 pirated VCDs and 2000 inlay cards besides a motorbike were seized (the raid includes 240 VCDs of Warner titles). Apparently, this is the fourth case against him and the decision makers are exploring the possibility of having him detained under the Goonda Act.
   
Other successful raids in Chennai led to the collective seizure of about 9130 pirated MP3 CDs and VCDs and 3200 inlay cards. The raids also uncovered a huge total of 4597 VCDs of Warner Titles.
   
The Chennai raids also led to the arrest of a well known supplier of pirated CDs, Haja Sheak. He was remanded to 15 days judicial custody. This is the second case against the accused.
   
While the beautiful city of Madurai yielded some 5405 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs in raids covering many shops across the city, raids across other regions of Tamil Nadu, including Theni, Dindigul, Trichy and Virudnagar also helped uncover a total of 6451 VCDs, MP3 CDs and CDs.
   
Karnataka, recently in the news for the callous shootout during a conference of some of India’s prominent mathematicians, ceded some 10855 pirated MP3 CDs, CDs and VCDs in raids across shops in Bangalore.
   
Raids in Vishakhapatanam and Hyderabad uncovered 8139 pirated DVDs and 588 pirated MP3 CDs. Suo Moto raids in Kerala too yielded about 9651 pirated CDs.
   
Chennai, T.N. :- 2 vendors were searched in Triplicane area of Chennai on 19th January. 510 MP3 CDs and 749 pirated VCDs were seized. 2 persons Vasan and Krishnamoorthy were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody. (Seizure includes 560 VCDs of Warner titles).

Chennai, T.N. :- 535 MP3 CDs and 545 pirated VCDs were seized from 2 vendors in Koyambedu area of Chennai on 21st January. 2 persons, Ramakrishna and Tondiayarpet were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody. (Seizure includes 313 VCDs of Warner titles).

Chennai, T.N. :- A CD recording unit was seized in a raid conducted at a residential premise in Triplicane, Chennai on 23rd January. 8 CD Writers, 115 MP3 CDs, 252 pirated VCDs and 1500 inlay cards were recovered. 2 persons Venkatesan and Aneez were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Chennai, T.N. :- In an excellent raid 3 premises were searched in Avadi, China Bazaar and Pudupet area of Chennai on 25th January. 2 CD Writers, 4410 MP3 CDs, 1233 pirated VCDs and 27000 inlay cards were seized. 3 persons Syed Mohamed Umar, Thameem Ansari and Syed Sathakathullah were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Chennai, T.N. :- 466 MP3 CDs and 691 pirated VCDs were seized from 2 vendors at Pallavaram and Vellacherry areas of Chennai on 27th January. 2 persons Adhul and Nagalingam were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody. (Seizure includes 363 VCDs of Warner titles).

Chennai, T.N. :- A CD recording unit was seized from a premises at Vyasarpadi, Chennai on 30th January. 15 CD Writers, 256 MP3 CDs, 100 blank CDRs and 977 pirated VCDs were recovered. Accused G. Kumar was arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Chennai, T.N. :- A vendor was raided in a suo motu raid conducted by the TN Police in Adambakkam area of Chennai on 3rd January. 654 pirated VCDs were seized. 1 person was arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Chennai, T.N. :- In a suo motu raid premises of 4 shops, Sekar Audio’s in Kodungaiyur area and Saroj Digital System in Triplicane area of Chennai were searched on 4th January. 464 pirated VCDs were seized. 2 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Chennai, T.N. :- Shop nos. 49A and 97A in Burma Bazaar and a vendor at High Court area of Chennai were raided in a suo motu raid conducted by T.N. Police on 7th January. 390 pirated VCDs were seized. 3 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Chennai, T.N. :- A shop called Trishal Audio at Mint Street and 2 vendors in Ambattur , Bose Road and Mannadi area of Chennai were searched in a suo motu raid conducted by the T.N. Police on9th, 11th, 15th and 16th January. 1469 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs were seized. 4 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Chennai, T.N. :- 2 vendors were searched by the T.N. Police in Madipakkam and Tambaram area of Chennai on 19th and 21st January. 437 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs were recovered. 2 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Dist. Trichy, T.N. :- 6 suo motu raids were conducted by the T.N. Police in Dist. Trichy on 3rd, 7th, 9th and 10th of January. Premises of Jai Video, Ganam Electronics, N. Tex Tailoring Shop, A to Z Collection Shop, Jayaraman Radio and Moorthy VCDs shop were searched. 1099 MP3 CDs and 1352 pirated VCDs were recovered. 6 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Dist. Puthukkottai, T.N. :- 570 MP3 CDs and 590 pirated VCDs were seized from 3 shops, Jaws Electronics, Nagammal Book Stall and Samy CD World in Dist. Puthukkottai in suo motu raids carried out by the T.N. Police on 18th and 19th January. 3 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Dist. Karur, T.N. :- 3 shops M.V. Tailor, Rytham Video and CD Musicals were searched in suo motu raids conducted by the T.N. Police on 2nd and 23rd January. 475 MP3 CDs and 311 pirated VCDs were recovered. 3 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Dist. Theni, T.N. :- In a suo motu raid conducted on Jannis Stickers and Kavitha Stores by the T.N. Police on 13th and 27th January. 835 MP3 CDs and 251 pirated VCDs were seized. 2 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Dist. Dindigul, T.N. :- 146 MP3 CDs were seized in a suo motu conducted by the T.N. Police in Dist. Dindigul on 31st January. Premises of Beema Foot were searched. 1 person was arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Dist. Madurai, T.N. :- In a suo motu anti-piracy operation conducted by the T.N. Police 7 raids were conducted in Dist. Madurai on 2nd, 6th, 7th, 9th, 19th, and 25th January. Shop no. 164 and 78 in Meenakshi Bazaar, Shop no. 87 in Pandi Bazaar and 4 vendors were searched. 883 MP3 CDs and 1090 pirated VCDs were seized. 7 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Dist. Virudnagar, T.N. :- 490 MP3 CDs and 466 pirated VCDs were seized from the premises of J.K.B. Musical and a vendor in Dist. Virudnagar in suo moto raids conducted by the T.N. Police on 27th and 30th January. 2 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Dist. Kanyakumarii, T.N. :- 4 suo motu raids were conducted by the T.N. Police on Azha Videos, Min Minin Musical and Shop nos. 80 and 81 in Dist. Kanyakumari on 10th and 11th January. 785 MP3 CDs and 405 pirated VCDs were seized. 3 persons were arrested and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.

Bangalore, Karnataka :- Shop nos. 13 and 13A were searched in National Market area of Bangalore on 16th January. 1270 MP3 CDs and 1010 pirated VCDs were seized. 2 persons Ashraff and Chandra were arrested. (Seizure includes 560 VCDs of Warner titles).

Bangalore, Karnataka :- In an excellent anti-piracy operation simultaneous raids were conducted on 6 premises, Shop no.s 22 and 23 in National Market, Visual World and Shop no. 25 in Commercial Plaza and Sweetone and Videotronics at S.P. Road, Bangalore on 23rd January. 6335 MP3 CDs and 5480 pirated VCDs were recovered. 6 persons were arrested. (Seizure includes 2460 VCDs of Warner titles).

Secunderabad, A.P. :- 1 Computer/CD Writer and 6 MP3 CDs were seized from the premises of Venus Communications at Secunderabad on 18th January. Accused Pulloori Kuranmy was arrested.

Cyberabad, A.P. :- A shop called Megha Internet Center was searched in Balanagar area of Cyberabad on 24th January. 1 Computer/CD Writer and 6 MP3 CDs were seized. 1 person Mohd. Khaleel was arrested.
   
   
Piracy Spreads across Smaller Eastern Towns

The Eastern Zone showed a significant increase in the number of instances of piracy from smaller towns. Despite the diligent efforts of institutions like IMI and assistance of many law enforcement agencies, pirates, earlier restricted to bigger cities, are continuing to grow across smaller towns.
   
Evidence of the above are the carefully timed raids in smaller towns and cities like Burdwan, Shillong, Dibrugarh, Naihati, Dakshin Dinajpur, Malda, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas that yielded a cumulative total of around 9 CD Writers, 435 CDs, 9295 cassettes and 81700 inlay cards and 7479 VCDs.
   
Three raids across shops called B.R. Electronics, Guddu Electronics and S.S. Service Point in Guwahati, Assam, also yielded about 522 pirated CDs and VCDs. Accused Fakruddin Ahmed and Nripen Das were arrested from the raided premises.
   
A series of raids across Kolkata, ruined New Year eve plans for pirates Raj Dayal Shaw, Ramji Yadav, Krishna Mukherjee, Sanjoy Mondal, Arun Gupta and Shaikh Jamir Alam when were arrested for selling pirated goods totaling to about 600 CDs, 2700 VCDs and 1983 MP3 CDs.
   
One significant success was achieved in a raid conducted by the West Bengal Police in Bankura Town in which a CD recording unit was seized from a residential premise. 1 Computer, 2 CD Writers, 1369 MP3 CDs, 350 blank CDRs and 2500 inlay cards were recovered and owner Susanta Mahapatra was arrested.
   
Kolkata, W.B. :- 1105 MP3 CDs and 424 pirated VCDs were seized from a vendor on A.J.C. Road, Kolkata on 16th January. Owner Khokan Sardar was arrested. (Seizure includes 35 VCDs of Warner titles).

Kolkata, W.B. :- Simultaneous raids were conducted on 6 vendors at Howrah Railway Bus Terminus on 25th January. 836 MP3 CDs and 3050 pirated VCDs were seized. 4 persons were arrested.

Kolkata, W.B. :- In an excellent raid a shop cum Library, Digital World was searched in Kolkata on 27th January. 1356 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs were seized. 2 persons Uttam Hazra and Swapan Basak were arrested.

Dist. Dhubri, Assam :- 791 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs were seized from 2 premises in Dist. Dhubri on 18th January. 2 persons were arrested.

Goalpara, Assam :- 633 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs were recovered from the premises of Sangam Music Center in Goalpara, Assam on 19th January. 1 person was arrested.

Dist. Jalpaiguri, W.B. :- In a suo motu raid conducted by the W.B. Police 348 pirated VCDs were seized from a shop at Surasang at Babupara on 18th January.

Burdwan, W.B. :- 4272 pirated MP3 CDs and VCDs were seized from 2 shops at Sharadpally, Shyampur in a suo motu raid conducted by W.B. police on 24th January. Owners Mitaram Kahar and Abhi Bhownik were arrested.

Burdwan, W.B. :- 2600 pirated VCDs were seized from a shop at Searsolemore, Ranigunge, Burdwan in a suo motu action by the W.B. police on 14th January. Owner Jawar Shaw was arrested.

Nadia, W.B. :- A shop called Ghosh Electronics was searched by the W.B. police at Ranaghat, Nadia on 16th January. 2164 pirated CDs were seized. Owner Sanjay Biswas was arrested.

Dist. Nadia, W.B. :- 672 pirated VCDs were seized from a shop called Bijot Mike Service at Santipur area of Dist. Nadia on 16th January. Owner Bijoy Sarkar was arrested.

Dist. Bankuar, W.B. :- 2 shops, Magina – Sini CD Plant and Music World were searched in Dist. Bankura in a suo motu raid conducted by the W.B. Police on 22nd and 24th January. 103 MP3 CDs and 935 pirated VCDs were seized. 2 persons were arrested.

Dist. 24 Parganas, W.B. :- A CD recording unit was recovered from a residential premises in a suo motu raid conducted by the Police in Baruipur area of Dist. 24 Parganas (South) on 30th January. 1 Computer/CD Writer, 40 MP3 CDs, 180 pirated VCDs, 100 blank CDRs and 10 inlay cards were seized. 2 persons were arrested.
 
   
Winter Sends Most Western Pirates into Deep Freeze
   
The steadily dipping mercury sent most pirates into a deep freeze. IMI with its team of intelligence and law enforcement agents continued to raid suspicious vendors and shops across the west zone. In one excellent raid, known pirate Ramesh Rajput was arrested from the premises of Sainath Music in Goyal Shopping Center at Borivali. The raid carried out on the 15th December yielded a total of 200 pirated cassettes, 1200 MP3 CDs and 640 pirated VCDs, including 500 VCDs of Warner titles.
   
In another series of massive simultaneous mass raids across Ahmedabad, Gujarat, 10 vendors were searched and 6100 pirated CDs and VCDs recovered. 5 persons suspected of being party to the nefarious activities of their shops were arrested. A CD recording unit was also raided in the Kalupur area of Ahmedabad on 15th December. 4 CD Writers, 6500 pirated CDs/cassettes and 72000 inlay cards were recovered. The raid was carried out by the Crime branch on information provided by the IMI team and led to the arrest of accused Chotu Bhai, a notorious pirate in the Kalupur area.
   
A raid on Sound Music Center in Pune also yielded some 325 MP3 CDs and 495 pirated VCDs and led to the arrest of accused Naresh Chetkindhi. Significantly, Sound Music Centre was on the list of targets for Maharashtra.
   
Mumbai :- A raid was conducted on a vendor at Marine Drive, Mumbai on 24th January. 420 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs were seized. 1 person was arrested.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat :- 2 shops New Raj Stores, Bombay Store and a vendor were searched in a suo motu raid conducted by the Gujarat Police on 10th and 18th January. 12994 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs were seized. 10 persons were arrested.

Baroda, Gujarat :- 3 vendors were raided in a suo motu action conducted by the Gujarat Police in Baroda City on 13th January. 16315 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs were recovered. 6 persons were arrested.

Anand Town, Gujarat :- 2379 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs were seized in a suo motu raid conducted on 2 vendors by the Gujarat Police. 2 persons were arrested.

Bhopal, M.P. :- 60 pirated VCDs and MP3 CDs were seized in a suo motu raid conducted b the MP Police at T.T. Nagar, Bhopal on 9th January. Accused Habib was arrested.
